Troubleshooting
===============================================================

Installing the game
If AutoRun doesn't start once you have put the game in the CD-ROM
drive, launch the autorun file: CD-ROM:\Autorun.exe.

Safe Mode

Safe mode can be accessed if/after the game has crashed. It is
provided as a means of isolating the cause of problems you may have
with sound or video card drivers. When launching with safe mode, you
can disable 3D video accelerator support or hardware support for sound
cards in its menu. Note that while operating Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror
is possible with software-only rendering, the game is designed to use a 3D
accelerator.

DirectX 8.0a

It is highly recommended that you install DirectX 8.0a from your
Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror install disk as DirectX 8.0a is known
to resolve a number of video card and other issues.

Video Card Drivers

Some video card drivers do not support Direct3D correctly. Typical
problems that may occur with these drivers include:

- Crashing on starting up
- Crashing when changing video resolutions
- Corrupted textures
- Garbage artifacts on screen
- Unexpected bright flashing on screen
- Unusually slow performance.

The solution is to go to your video card manufacturer's website and
download updated drivers for your card. It is highly recommended that,
given an option, you download and install Microsoft-certified (WHQL) drivers.

Hardware Compatibility
================================================================

Direct 3D Support
-----------------------------------------------------------------

The following 3D accelerators are partially supported with Direct 3D Support:

- 3D Blaster Savage 4, Windows 98 SE, driver 4.11.01.2104: the menus are blurry but
the game play is fine.

- Millenium G200, Windows 98 SE, driver 4.12.01.2730: the game is slow but playable.
Higher resolutions have slower frame rate.

- Millenium G200, Windows XP, driver 5.12.01.1200: the game is slow but playable.
Higher resolutions have slower frame rate.

- Monster 3DII, Windows 98 SE, drivers 4.10.01.0205 and 4.11.01.1151: the default
resolution is 512x384, which causes the text in some menus to appear distorted.
When the user attempts to change the resolution to 1024x768, the resolution automatically
reverts to the default resolution.

- Starfighter 3d PCI, Windows 98 SE, driver 4.10.01.0323: the game plays in a window.

- Stealth II G460, Windows 98 SE, driver 4.10.01.1400: the game will only play in
a window. The game resolutions are only 640x480 and 800x600.

- Stealth II G460,  Windows XP, driver 5.00.01.0604: the game will only play in a window.
Serious loss of frame-rate at 1024x768.

- Terminator Beast Savage 3D, Windows XP, driver 5.01.620.0003: the game plays in a window.

- Viper II S3 Savage 2000, Windows 98 SE, driver 4.12.01.9007: in the character selection
screen, the back of the characters is translucent. It doesn't support 1024x768
resolution or higher.

- Viper V770 Ultra TNT 2, Windows 98 SE, drivers 4.12.01.0368 and 4.13.01.2183:
in 800x600x and above resolutions, during lots of action (multiple bots, smoke),
the game suffers from a slow, but the frame rate is playable . If the user escapes from
the game play, much of the menu text and graphics, as well as the mouse cursor, are missing.

- Viper II S3 Savage 2000, Windows XP, driver 5.01.2600.000: the game plays in a window.
Brightness is very dark. It doesn't support resolutions of 1024x768 and above.

- Viper V770 Ultra TNT2, Windows XP, driver 5.13.01.2183: in 800x600 and above resolutions,
during lots of action (multiple bots, smoke), the game suffers from a slow, but the
frame rate is playable. If the user escapes from game play, much of the menu text and
graphics, as well as the mouse cursor, are missing.

- Voodoo 3 3000, Windows 98 SE, driver 4.12.01.0666: the game plays in a window.

- Voodoo 3 3000, Windows XP, driver 5.00.2489.0028: when the user launches the game,
the following error occurs: "This application has failed because glide2x.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem." However, the game works after this,
regardless. In all resolutions, the game is displayed in a window. Only 640x480 and 800x600
are listed as available resolutions.

The following 3D accelerators are not supported with Direct 3D Support:

- SiS6326, Windows 98 SE, driver 4.12.01.0368: the Main Menu interface appears
with garbled text.

- Terminator Beast Savage 3D, Windows 98 SE, driver 4.11.01.4005: the game hangs on a
black screen in Direct 3D Support & S3 MeTaL for Windows modes. However, the game does
run in Software Rendering mode only.

- Viper V550 TNT, Windows 98 SE, drivers 4.12.01.0368 and 4.13.01.2183: if the user escapes
from game play, much of the menu text and graphics, as well as the mouse cursor, are missing.

- Viper V550 TNT, Windows XP: the mouse cursor disappears behind menu boxes, causing the
user to be unable to start the game.

Processors

With the AMD K6 200MHz, there is a low frame rate in all resolutions, during game play.
The frame rate is very low but playable when there is lots of action onscreen.

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin

ReadMe File 9/20/2002 Version 1.0

Part 1: Things You Should Know

Please read through the DirectX section of this document. This section has information that is vital to successfully running Hitman 2 on your system.

1.1 DirectX

This game is optimised for Microsoft's DirectX 8.1. In order for you to play the game, you must have DirectX 8.1-compliant drivers for your video card and sound card. Please note that although DirectX 8.1 is installed with the game, your video and sound card drivers will not be upgraded to DirectX 8.1 drivers.

You will need to obtain the latest DirectX 8.1 drivers from your card manufacturer or PC supplier. These drivers cannot be supplied by Eidos.

1.2 Memory and Performance

While the game will run fine with 128MB of RAM, your playing experience will be smoother if you have at least 256MB.

Regardless of how much memory you have, you can maximize your available memory and increase the overall performance of the game engine by doing the following:

q Closing any open windows

q Shutting down all other programs, including menu-bar programs like ICQ

q Defragmenting your hard drive

Eidos recommends that you have no other programs running at all while playing Hitman 2. Other programs, including virus checkers, system utilities and screen savers can cause system degradation when playing games software and may conflict with the game for system resources, potentially resulting in instability and crashes.

1.3 Known Issues

q Users experiencing problems with Hitman 2: Silent Assassin should verify that they have the latest drivers for all components in their PC.

q We recommend that you do not ALT-TAB out of the game at any point.

q Users who have the Hitman 2 demo already installed on their system might not get an install option from the setup menu. Be sure to uninstall the Hitman 2 Demo prior to installing the full version of the game.

q Users of Logitech mice might have problems using the mouse wheel in the game. Setting the middle mouse button to "Middle Button" in the Logitech mouse setup menu usually fixes this.

q On the lowest graphic settings (Object detail - LOW, and the Draw Distance - NEAR), the user might encounter some visual abnormalities.

q The 3D sound Renderer is grayed out in the sound options menu. This is due to a problem with Open AL and the game.

q Hitman 2 will only allow you to create 99 saves to your hard drive. If you have reached the limit and want to continue saving you will have to overwrite some of your earlier saved games or delete them to make room for new saves.

q Audio pops: If you have the volume set to their highest levels out on your sound card you may encounter various audio pops during the course of gameplay. We recommend that you reduce the sound volume settings on your sound card and turn the volume up on your speakers to compensate for that change.

q Uninstaller corruption: If at any point you are unable to uninstall this program, Simply deleting the Hitman 2 folder will not remove all of the files that were installed to your PC. We suggest that you re-install Hitman 2 to the same directory that you installed to originally. Once the install has completed you will be able to fully uninstall the Hitman 2 from your PC.

q Muffled audio or looping audio when EAX is enabled: Certain sound cards are not EAX compatible. Please check to see if your sound card supports EAX. If you have enabled EAX in your sound options, and you noticed that your weapons sound muffled of certain sound effects are repeating then your card most likely does not support this feature. Disabling EAX in the sound options menu should clear up the audio problems.

IO Interactive and Eidos Interactive are committed to providing customer support for our games on a continuing basis. In that spirit, there may be a patch for Hitman 2 forthcoming; visit the Eidos website for more information.

Part 2: Technical Issues

2.1 Installation & Set-up

System Requirements

The minimum system requirements are as follows:

OS: Windows 98/ME/XP

CPU: PIII 450mhz or equivalent

RAM: 128MB Ram

Video: 16MB DirectX 8.1 Compatible video card

Sound: DirectX 8.1 Compatible sound card

CD: 16x CD ROM Drive

Input: Keyboard/Mouse

Hard drive: 800MB of free HD space

The recommended system requirements are as follows:

CPU: PIII 1Ghz

RAM: 256MB Ram

Video: 32MB DirectX 8.1 Compatible graphics card

Sound: EAX Advanced HD enabled sound card

Preparing Your Hard Drive

To ensure that your installation is trouble free, you should check to see that your hard drive and file system are both tuned for optimum performance. Windows comes with two utility programs that find and fix any errors and optimise your hard drive performance. The first of these programs is called scandisk. Scandisk will check your hard drive for problems and can fix any that it finds. You can run scandisk by clicking on the Start button from the Windows Taskbar, followed by Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, and finally scandisk.

Once scandisk has finished running, you should next optimise your hard drive's performance by running a program called Disk Defragmenter.. You can run Disk Defragmenter by clicking on the Start button from the Windows desktop, followed by Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools, and finally Disk Defragmenter.

Installing Hitman 2

Installing Hitman 2 is easy. Simply insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive. After a few seconds, the Launch Panel will appear.

This program will guide you through the remaining process via onscreen prompts. If at any time you are instructed to restart your computer, do so.

In the event the Launch Panel does not appear when you insert the CD:

Double-click on the My Computer icon, then double-click on the CD-ROM icon, and lastly double-click on the Autorun file to bring up the Launch Panel OR:

q Click on the Start button.

q Choose Run from the pop-up menu.

q Type d:\setup in the box provided (where d: designates your CD-ROM drive letter).

q Click on the OK button to begin the install program.

You will be prompted to select the path and directory to which you wish to install the game on your hard drive. The default is

C:\Program Files\Eidos Interactive\IO Interactive\Hitman 2

You may change this if you wish to.

At some point, the Microsoft DirectX 8.1 install prompt will appear if you do not have it on your system already. Please read the on-screen information before selecting an option. You may either choose to install or not install at this time. If the Hitman 2 installer detects an active version of DirectX 8.1 on your system, we encourage you to not reinstall DirectX. If the installer does not detect DirectX 8.1, you must install it before you are able to play Hitman 2 (please refer to the next section of this guide before proceeding).

Starting/Loading The Game

Once the install has finished and you have opted to run the game, the Hitman 2: Silent Assassin Game Configuration Panel will appear on the screen. A list box allows you to choose your graphic settings and resolution. The option you choose will stay selected every time you run the game.

Once you are happy with your choices, simply click on the Save and Launch button to start the game.

You may also:

q Click on the Uninstall button to uninstall the game.

q Click on the View Readme button to view the readme file.

q Click on OK to play the game.

q Click on the Exit button to exit the Launch Panel.

If you are going to play the game at a later time insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive. After a few seconds, the Hitman 2 Launch panel should appear on the screen via the AutoPlay feature. Now click on the PLAY button to start the game. There is also a button present to Exit.

In the event the AutoPlay feature does not work, you may click on the My Computer icon and then click on the CD-ROM icon to bring up the Launch Panel.

OR

q Click on the Start button.

q Choose Programs from the pop-up menu.

q Drag your mouse to the right and click on Hitman 2 from the list.

q Click on Hitman 2 from the ensuing pop-up menu.

Uninstalling Hitman 2

If you need to UNINSTALL Hitman 2, you may do any of the following three things:

Insert the Hitman 2 CD into the CD-ROM drive to activate the AutoPlay feature. This will bring up the Launch Panel. Click on the Uninstall button, then click on the Yes button from the ensuing pop-up panel to uninstall the program

OR

q Click on the Start button.

q Choose Programs from the pop-up menu.

2.2 CD-ROM Problems

Hitman 2 requires at least a Quad-Speed CD-ROM drive with 32-bit Windows drivers.

AutoPlay Issues

Why doesn't the AutoPlay feature come up when I insert the Hitman 2 CD into the CD-ROM drive?

This is usually a configuration issue. There are many different ways to enable the AutoPlay functions of Windows. The standard method is described below:

1) Enter the Control Panel from the desktop by clicking on the Start button, followed by Settings, and then Control Panel.

2) Double-click the icon labelled System, usually located alphabetically towards the bottom of the Control Panel window, to bring up the System Properties panel.

3) Click on the tab at the top labelled Device Manager and when the new panel appears, locate the section labelled CD-ROM and click the Plus (+) sign in front of it. (If there is a minus sign in front, don't click it.)

4) Now double-click the CD-ROM drive revealed and the CD-ROM Properties panel will appear.

5) Click on the Settings tab at the top.

6) Towards the middle of the panel, you should see a few checkboxes within the Options section. At the bottom of that section, you should see a checkbox labelled Auto insert notification.

7) Make sure there is a check mark in the box provided and click on the OK button to complete the process.

If the game Auto Plays multiple times:

Some CD ROM drives cause Hitman 2 to AutoPlay multiple times, which also may result in lack of control within the game. To remedy this problem click on the CD ROM properties in the System Properties panel and under settings turn off Auto Notification.

2.3 Crashes and Lock-Ups

When I start Hitman 2, my mouse cursor disappears and my computer locks-up.

Chances are your installed audio card drivers are not compatible with DirectX. The only solution is to get a DirectX 8.1-compatible driver from your audio card manufacturer.

When I start Hitman 2, I receive the following error message:

"The application Hitman 2.exe referenced memory at address xxxx:xxxx that can't be read from."

Chances are your installed video card drivers are not compatible with DirectX. The only solution is to get a DirectX 8.1-compatible driver from your video card manufacturer.

The Installer keeps stopping when a certain percentage is complete.

There are three likely causes:

q You may have run out of free space on your hard drive. Please remove unwanted programs to free up additional space for the game, and then reinstall Hitman 2.

q Files are possibly being copied to a corrupted area of your hard drive. If this is so, you'll need to run the scandisk program and make sure to use the Thorough option (see previous). After scandisk has finished running and has informed you that your drive is free of errors, try to re-install.

q There may be dirt or fingerprints on the CD-ROM disc itself. Examine the bottom of the disc; if you see any fingerprints or dirt, carefully clean the disc using a clean, soft, lint-free cloth by wiping from the centre of the disc (near the hole) towards the outer edge in a straight line.

Hitman 2 is crashing to the desktop with no error messages.

Several different things can cause this problem. Here's a list of the most common culprits associated with these crashes:

q Make sure the CD-ROM is clean (check for both scratches and smudges on the reading surface of the CD).

q Make sure the game has been installed properly.

q Make sure DirectX 8.1 has been installed properly.

q Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card and that they are DirectX 8.1-compatible.

q Make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound card and that they are DirectX 8.1-compatible.

q Make sure Virtual Memory is enabled on your system.

q Run Scandisk.

q Run Disk Defragmenter.

q Clean out old temp (.TMP) files from the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP or C:\WINx\TEMP directory on your hard drive (from Windows Explorer).

q Make sure you do not have any Anti-Virus utilities (like Norton's AntiVirus) running resident prior to playing Hitman 2.

q Make sure you do not have any third-party Windows memory management utilities (like QuarterDeck's QEMM) running resident prior to playing Hitman 2.

q Make sure you do not have any 3rd party Windows disk caching utilities running resident prior to playing Hitman 2.

q Make sure you do not have Norton's Crash Protector running resident prior to playing Hitman 2.

q Try uninstalling and then reinstalling the game.

q Try exiting the game, rebooting your machine, and re-entering the game.

Note that if your system crashes to the desktop while playing Hitman 2, you should probably reboot your computer before starting a new play session. Otherwise, DirectDraw or DirectSound may be in a locked state, and the game will be unable to use your sound or video hardware.

Earth.  You can share data from Google Earth and learn about new features
in the client and how to use them.

http://bbs.keyhole.com

Minimum Configuration
---------------------

 - Windows 2000, or XP
 - Pentium 3, 500Mhz
 - 128M RAM
 - 400MB disk space
 - Network speed: 128Kbits/sec
 - 3D-capable video card with 16Mbytes of VRAM
 - 1024x768, "16-bit High Color" screen

Recommended Configuration
-------------------------

 - Windows XP
 - Pentium 4 2.4GHz+ or AMD 2400xp+
 - 512M RAM

[ NOTE: see http://bbs.keyhole.com/GoogleEarth-Beta-differences.txt
for a complete list of changes between client versions ]

Compatibility
-------------

 - "Google Earth" is our free product and uses the same installer as
"Google Earth Plus".  You can upgrade your Google Earth to Plus
via the Help menu.  This version is for non-commercial use only.

 - "Google Earth Plus" is our subscription-based consumer product.
It has all the functionality of the Free version and also includes:
e-mail support (not just online), annotation, import from GPS devices
and csv files. This version is for non-commercial use only.

 - "Google Earth Pro" is for commercial use.

 - "Google Earth EC" is the enterprise client.

 - Many new graphics-intensive features have been added, so graphics card
compatibility is an issue.  Be sure to update your graphics driver.

 - This version supports Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.

 - Windows XP-x64 is supported, though a number of users have reported
problems with the program failing at initialization.  These issues
have been fixed by switching to the 64-bit versions of the appropriate
   graphics card driver.

 - It does not run on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows ME
   or older operating systems.

 - There are known issues with "Windows XP for tablet PCs" and
   Windows XP Media Center.

 - It has also been tested successfully with Windows XP Service Pack 2
   (SP2) with this exception:

  * If you install Windows XP SP2, it may DOWNgrade your driver to
a version earlier than is found on the manufacturer's website.  Some
people report that such nVidia, Intel, and ATI drivers do not work
with Google Earth.  To avoid this problem, please do the following _after_
installing XP SP2: Go to the manufacturer's website, download, and
install the latest driver.  Note: Refer to the driver *version number*
-- not the date -- to determine how up-to-date your driver is.

 - A minimum screen size of 1024x768 pixels is required (it will run on lower
resolutions but functionality is limited).  Also, "True Color (32-bit)"
resolution and a sufficient graphics card are required for clamped filled
polygons; otherwise, they will be displayed as outlines only.

 - The default OpenGL graphics rendering engine is the usually the best from
both a performance and visual quality perspective, though some machines may
need to use DirectX.  See the "Graphics Card" section below for more info.

 - The DirectX version of Google Earth can be selected in the Preferences
panel.  If there is a problem at startup, you can also change it from
the Start Menu item.  Use it on older machines and laptop computers that
have trouble with the default OpenGL version.

 - The DirectX version of Google Earth requires DirectX 8.1 or newer.
Microsoft's current release is 9.0c.  Installation details are here:

     http://earth.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=21468

 - The ATI Omega drivers are not supported. If used, they may produce frequent
crashes in the client.  Use only manufacturer recommended drivers.

 - If you have a Quadro, FireGL, or other workstation card that has problems
with printing, movie making, or clamped filled polygons (flashing or
replicated on the screen), change one of the options in the advanced area
of your Display Properties and then restart the Google Earth client.
   (eg: Control Panels->Display->settings->Advanced->3D for ATI)

   a)  For ATI FireGL, find the application configuration section
tab, and choose "3dsmax."  ATI will soon be adding a "Keyhole"
mode, so choose that if it is available.

   b)  For Quadro, select the "use unified back/depth buffer" check box.

 - If the client crashes, it will create a 'minidump' file that can help
debug and fix the problem.  It does not contain any personal information.
If the option is selected during installation, this is automatically sent to
Google. Regardless of whether you send it to Google, a copy is made on your
machine. The file names starts with "Google_Earth" and contains the version
number/type, the date/time and has a ".dmp" extension. It is stored in your
temporary directory - to see the most recent crash, sort by 'Date Modified'.

      Directory: C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp\
      Example Name: Google_Earth_EC_3.0.0xxx_051017-114650.dmp

 - If you have having trouble connecting to Google Earth servers and your
machine has a software firewall such as:

McAfee Personal Firewall Plus (also in McAfee Internet Security Suite)
      ZoneAlarm
      Norton Personal Firewall

you may have inadvertently blocked Google Earth's access to the internet.
Microsoft Windows XP service pack 2 does not cause this problem. A common
symptom is Google Earth reporting lack of access and that it will instead
use the local cache. Please verify that GoogleEarth.exe is not explicitly
blocked and that access to "port 80" is available for non-browser
applications. You can typically find these settings by opening your
   anti-virus software preferences.

McAfee Personal Firewall Plus  (2005 ver 7.0)
      1) Open Google Earth and try logging in
      2) Open McAfee Personal Firewall Plus
Start -> All Programs -> McAfee -> McAfee Personal Firewall Plus
      3) Click on "Internet Applications" in the left column
      4) Scroll down and select the "Google Earth" entry
      5) In the "Permissions" column it needs to say "Allow Full Access"
      6) If it does not say that, press the button on the bottom right
that says "Allow Full Access", verify it's changed using last step

   Zone Labs ZoneAlarm
      1) Open Google Earth and try logging in
      2) Open ZoneAlarm
Start -> All Programs -> Zone Labs -> Zone Labs Security
      3) Click on the "Programs" tab on the right of the window
      4) From the list that's displayed, if Google Earth is not shown, click
the "Add" button on the bottom-right of the window. Navigate to:
            C:\Program Files\Google\Google Earth\GoogleEarth.exe.
      5) Select "Google Earth" from the list
      6) In the "Access" column for Google Earth, look purple question
marks and red X's for the "Trusted" and "Internet" sub-columns. Left
click and change them all to the green checkmark "Allow"

Norton Personal Firewall  (2002 ver 4.0)
      1) Open Google Earth and try logging in
      2) Open Norton Personal Firewall
Start -> All Programs -> Norton Personal Firewall
              -> Norton Personal Firewall
      3) On the left, click on the button "Personal Firewall"
      4) From the new options, press the button "Internet Access Control"
      5) From the new screen, if Google Earth is not in the list, press the
"Add" button that is near the bottom of the window. Navigate to:
            C:\Program Files\Google\Google Earth\GoogleEarth.exe
(Press ok if it says "You are attempting to add an application
          that already has rules.")
      6) Click "Permit this application access to the Internet" and then OK

 - Proxies may also block the use of Google Earth. Make sure your proxy permits
   access on port 80 to kh.google.com, geo.keyhole.com and auth.keyhole.com.

-  Google Earth uses Windows "Internet Options" (same as Internet Explorer) so
be sure your proxy/network settings are correct in the Internet Options
   Control Panel.

New Features
------------

  - A faster, better disk cache mechanism has been added.  Upgrading from
Keyhole 2 or pre-3.0.0464, you will lose your existing disk cache.
This is unavoidable but we will try to avoid doing this in the future.
NOTE: Your myplaces.kml file will NOT be lost.

  - The cache file location has been moved into Local Settings for new
installations.  Old installations will keep your current location. This
is to support roaming profiles (by not copying/backing up the cache).
    The cache locations are:

New Installations (version 3.0.0693 or later):
        C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\GoogleEarth\dbCache.dat
        C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\GoogleEarth\dbCache.dat.index

    Upgrades (version 3.0.0616 and earlier):
        C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Google\GoogleEarth\dbCache.dat
        C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Google\GoogleEarth\dbCache.dat.index

  - Fly To, Local Search, and Driving Directions are now integrated with
Google's search engine.  The last 10 search entries are remembered.

  - 3D buildings are currently available in 38 US cities, try San Francisco.

  - You can "drive to" and "drive from" any placemark, icon, or MyPlaces entry
    using the right-click context menu.

  - Search Results and MyPlaces now have a "snippet view," showing the first
    two lines of the description.

  - Streaming performance (updating data via the network) should be greatly
improved.  Server infrastructure at Google helps, but the software has
also changed to take advantage of it.

  - A new filetype, KMZ, is available.  KMZ files are KML files that have been
zipped up along with their related files, such as image overlays.  This
means that you can share image overlays and custom icons without having to
publish the files on an external web server or mail them as an attachment
    with the KML.

  - More flexible tour mode: touring a line (e.g., the route from driving
directions) or touring a folder is now possible.  Folder tours allow items
to be displayed but not included in the tour.  This is done by limiting the
tour to items only in the selected folder.

  - The description now appears in an on-screen balloon instead of in the side
    window.

  - Web page results from search and URLs embedded in description can now be
viewed in an embedded web browser (or, via options/preferences, in your
    default external browser).

  - Rolling over an icon highlights the label.

  - Double-click in the 3D view to point-n-zoom:  The old single-click
point-n-zoom mode has been moved to the options/preferences panel, but
double-click on the earth and you will zoom in to that point.

  - The transparency slider now appears only when an image overlay is selected
or when a folder of polygons is selected.

  - A new Latitude/Longitude grid is available.

  - A new overview inset is available from the View menu.  Use
Tools->Options->Navigation to adjust its size and zoom.

  - The installer now has option in to specify the install directory, and the
location for the dbcache.dat file and myplaces.kml.

  - The "High Res Places" and "World Places" menus have been removed and a
small sight-seeing list has moved to the default_myplaces.kml file.  As you
will see, tracking the high-resolution places in new Google Earth data has
    gone beyond the list stage.

  - New mouse controls for tilt and rotate.  These controls are accessed by
pressing down on the scroll wheel (or middle mouse button).  To tilt the
camera, hold the scroll wheel down while moving the mouse up and down.
To rotate the camera, hold the scroll wheel down while moving the mouse
left and right.  To rotate without tilting (e.g. to do a 360 degree
rotation), hold the shift key and scroll wheel down while moving the
mouse in a circular motion around the center of the screen.

  - A new G-force mode has been added to navigation:
Drag using the right mouse button to control acceleration/deceleration.
Drag using the left mouse button to control pitch and yaw.
Switch modes using Tools/Options/Control or use Ctrl-G (GForce mode) and
      Ctrl-T (regular trackball mode).

  - Google Earth can now be installed without administrative privileges.
    This applies to Free/Plus only.

  - GPS data can now be viewed in Google Earth, either directly input from
Garmin/Magellan devices (including Garmin USB interface), or by using
.gpx or .loc file loading. (Plus/Pro/EC only)

  - Draw Path and Draw Polygon are now available, including extruded and
    at-altitude items. (Plus/Pro/EC only)

  - You can now select lines and polygons.  Use ctrl+left-click to select the
object and show the balloon description.  Use ctrl+right-click to get
the context menu (which will allow editing).

  - Style Templates can now be applied to "Import..." data and existing KML
    folders.

  - You can perform batch geocoding of street addresses using the Import menu
item to import a .csv (comma-separated values) file (Plus/Pro/EC only)

  - Significant speed improvements in High-resolution Printing and Movie
    Making.

  - Icons and lines can now be displayed at altitude. Icons at altitude can
have a "stem" connecting them to the ground.

  - GIFs (non-animated) can be used as overlays and icons.

  - ICO (.ico) files can be used as icons.

  - Folder open-state is now remembered.

  - Layer-enables (eg: terrain, lodging, earthquakes) are remembered between
    runs of the software.

  - Measure mode now optionally disables mouse navigation to simplify the task.

  - IMG SRC can now be used in the Description field and the image can be
either http:// (remote) or C:\ (local).  Local images will be included when
    you send item as .kmz.

  - Movies can be saved as sequences of image files.

  - Movie Maker now has a 25/50 Frames-per-second (fps) option.

  - A KML spec has been published, see http://code.google.com

  - A Find option has been added to help location named items in MyPlaces, this
    is accessed using Ctrl-F.

  - The embedded web window can now be opened with a vertical split

  - The network link icon color/animation now reflects the status of the update

  - Google ads are now shown inside some of the information balloons.  These
are experimental and will only be shown some of the time.

Fixes and Known Issues
----------------------
Fixes from 2.2:

  - In rare cases, Keyhole 2 would crash on exit while saving MyPlaces
and lose either the session data or the whole file.  Many changes
have been made to better protect against this situation, including
a more reliable backup mechanism. This backup system will save copies of
your myplaces.kml file in the same location where it is normally stored.
Unless you specified a different location during install, it is located at:

        C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Google\GoogleEarth\myplaces.kml

  - Entries in MyPlaces will no longer occasionally be re-ordered during an exit
    and restart.

  - Road labels are now drawn in higher quantity at low altitude.

  - Shared display styles from an imported folder can now be disabled by moving
their contents into new folders and applying a new shared display style.

  - Labels in prints are no longer truncated.

  - Overlay images now retain their aspect ratio when imported.

  - Google Earth now works with Windows Server 2003

  - Multiple image overlays loaded simultaneously no longer sporadically fail
    to load.

  - Network link refresh will no longer sporadically fail and require program
    restart.

Known issues (November):

  - Automatic Keyboard Popup is not supported on the Tablet PC using Google
Earth.  The user must manually activate the onscreen keyboard with these
    devices.

  - Google Earth may not run well on Media Center PCs

  - Google Earth may get "Could not load image" errore at startup on accounts
with Unicode characters (e.g. accented characters: ِ).  This causes two
images on the bottom corners to display "Image not found".  This typically
occurs on partitions that used the FAT32, even if they have been upgraded
to NTFS.  It also occurs on Chinese, Japanese and Windows account with
unicode characters (e.g. Kanji).  To fix the problem, see here:

        http://earth.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=29462

  - On Chinese, Japanese and Korean versions of Windows, if your username
includes unicode characters (e.g. Kanji), then you will get a "Could not
save My Places" error when exiting the application.  You ,au also see the
"Could not load image" error described above. To fix the problem, see here:

        http://earth.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=29573

  - Google Earth Free will not install on restricted domain account (restricted
local accounts work correctly).  For more information see here:

        http://earth.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=29572

  - Some people with GPS devices using USB are having trouble importing data.
COM->USB should work, but it depends on the quality of the adapter.
IOgear's GUC232A does _not_ work, unfortunately.  SiiG and Magellan
    adapters seem to work well.

  - Driving-directions/measure/lines do not draw with thickness in DX.

  - A maximized window that is then full-screened will not return to maximized
    when full-screen is exited.

  - Drag-n-drop inside the Places window doesn't scroll and doesn't give enough
visual feedback.  You can use cut-paste to move items long distances in the
    scroll.

  - If you enable a folder full of overlays, you may require more resources
(video memory and main memory) than your system is capable of.  Killing the
application may be your only exit.

  - Interlaced PNG image files are not supported as overlays.

GPS - Support
-------------

For more information about the GPS devices supported by Google Earth, see here:

    http://earth.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=29566

Some versions of Google Earth include the executable binary of
Robert Lipe's GPSBabel program.  That project has been developed
under the GNU Public License and any copies of it can only be
distributed if and only if they include a copy of the license.

The GPL license can be found in:
       C:\Program Files\Google\Google Earth Plus\gpl.txt
(or similar directory if you custom installed the application)

GPSBabel source code can be found at http://www.gpsbabel.org/.

It's a great program for GPS device input and file translations.

Graphics Card/Driver Compatibility Notes
----------------------------------------

Typically, OpenGL has a better visual appearance due to standardized access
to features.  If you can, use OpenGL.  Typically, DirectX is more reliable
on older graphics cards and may be your only choice in some circumstances.
The ATI Omega drives are not supported.

 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 !ALWAYS update your graphics drivers!
 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For information on how to update your drivers, see here:

    http://earth.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=21462

Desktop machines can always have their drivers updated from the chip
provider's website (nVidia, ATI, Intel, S3...), but laptop machines rely upon
the manufacturer of the laptop (Dell, Toshiba, HP, ...) and how often
they choose to adopt/publish updates for their graphics drivers.  Even big-name
manufacturers can be up to 1 year behind the updates from the chip provider.
If you notice this, complain to your manufacturer about it.  Hopefully they
will increase the speed of their updates.

For Windows XP-64, you may need to install specific 64 bit versions of your
graphics card drivers.  Please refer to the manufacturer website for these
versions.

Some cards may need to be switched to DirectX mode.  This should happen
automatically but some cards need it to be done manually, particularly low
end ATI cards and low end S3 cards.  What follows are instructions for manual
switching, overview of manufacturer compatibility and then information on
specific cards.

**Manual switching to DirectX or OpenGL**
Start->All Programs->Google Earth->Set Google Earth to DirectX Mode, or
Start->All Programs->Google Earth->Set Google Earth to OpenGL Mode

Graphics Card Manufacturer Summary:

ATI - for startup crashes switch manually to DirectX, notes for laptop FireGL below
Intel - some instability, see notes below
Matrox - generally better supported in DirectX (should automatically switch)
nVidia - generally works, should automatically switch if needed
S3 - should automatically switch to DirectX, manually switch if crash occurs
SiS - consistent problems, more compatible in DirectX
Trident - consistent problems, may be more compatible in DirectX

Detailed Graphics Card Compatibility:

ATI FireGL* cards
OpenGL - can have problems with movie/print/email-image when covered,
To work around this problem on ATI FireGL's OpenGL, go to the properties
panel of the Display, choose settings-->advanced-->select the tab named
"OpenGL", "graphics" or "configuration" and select the "Keyhole"
profile (which is available in the latest drivers).
DirectX - Even though DirectX doesn't have the printing problem, OpenGL is
recommended after the workaround above. Also DX may stop displaying the
earth when removing or adding an external monitor, simply restart to fix.

ATI Rage128, Rage128Pro XPERT 2000
Driver: XP: 6.13.3279 or later, 2K: 5.13.01.3279 or later, WinME/Win98: 4.13.7192 or later)
  OpenGL - doesn't work
DirectX - works (needs 32-bit True Color for e-mailing images, printing &
movie making). Text can appear as white rectangles - to fix reduce the
size of the Google Earth window or your screen resolution.  Shading on
buildings is linear instead of flat.  Even with these problems, DX is
recommended because of its' greater performance.

Intel 810/815 - driver 6.13.01.3196 or later
OpenGL - Works except for 3D buildings and filled clamped polygons.
DirectX - on certain configurations, there are problems.  Use OpenGL.
If you do use DirectX, you must switch to 16 bit color in order
to run, it will not run in 24-bit mode. Printing doesn't work.
  - Intel 810/815 with .3198 driver and Windows XP-SP2-RC2 running OpenGL
crashes.  Don't install XP-SP2 on a machine with this graphics card.
  - Does not run in 24-bit video mode, change to 16 bit mode.
  - Changing anisotropic settings can cause image corruption until restart.
  - Fullscreen shows black patches and locks view until you switch back again.

DISCLAIMERS
===========

  * The Address Search feature in Google Earth does not guarantee pinpoint
accuracy.  The application relies on a geocoded database that attempts
to interpolate the location of an address. This interpolation is done by
taking the total number of addresses in a given "block" and assuming an
even distribution of the addresses along that block.

[For example, in the 800 block of Main Street there are ten addresses in
the database.  The application assumes that the fifth address is located
at the half-way point of the 800 block.]
